In response to Northeast Ohio's high incidence of various types of cancer and the area's aging population, University Hospitals is investing $250 million in its new University Hospitals Cancer Hospital. The hospital will be located on the Case Medical Center campus.

Hospital officials believe the Ireland Cancer Center, which consistently ranks among the top 25 cancer hospitals in the United States, has reached its capacity to meet the growing needs of Northeast Ohio. What’s more, Ireland’s main facility has grown into a collection of departments and services located in numerous buildings on the Case Medical Center campus.

That prompted the decision to build a new, freestanding hospital. The 375,000-square-foot facility, which is scheduled to open to patients in the spring of 2011, will bring all facets of cancer care to a single location. The hospital will be equipped with up to 150 patient beds and will combine the most effective protocols and the latest findings for cancer care.

The Cancer Hospital is part of University Hospitals’ strategic plan known as Vision 2010. The plan calls for investments of more than $1 billion in the Case Medical Center campus, with new facilities and the expansion of services, along with new construction and enhancements to University Hospitals’ regional ambulatory centers.
