FROM THE PLAIN DEALER: The designers of the new Cleveland convention center and medical mart envision a lively makeover of the three-block downtown Mall with gardens, sport courts, reflecting pools, outdoor stages, public restrooms and fancy lighting. Extra design work is needed to plan water lines, a pump room, electrical hookups and other utilities required to support the amenities on the Mall’s surface, which will double as the green roof of the convention center. Last year, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson appointed 15 sports, foundation and real estate executives to a new Group Plan Commission to shepherd enhancements to the Mall and other public spaces around the convention center.

The space will open up a dramatic view of Lake Erie. In three months, crews have demolished the Justice Center parking deck, the Chicago Title and County Annex buildings, and the Sportsman’s Restaurant. Demolition is also proceeding on schedule on the Convention Center and Malls B and C. No less than 95% of the debris from the facility is slated for recycling and reuse, including a variety of materials such as metal, tin, aluminum, copper, brass, and concrete.
