In the News :: August 22, 2011
FROM THE PLAIN DEALER: The outlines of Cuyahoga County's $465 million medical mart and convention center are taking shape downtown.
With all demolition and excavation work complete, construction crews are forming the foundations and walls of what will become more than 500,000 square feet of medical showrooms, convention space, meeting rooms and a grand ballroom.
Crews have filled 47 of 66 caissons -- massive stilts of concrete and steel that reach 150 feet into the ground, said Dave Johnson, a spokesman for Chicago-based developer MMPI, which will operate the taxpayer-financed project for the county. Next week, workers will begin erecting steel girders.
When the complex opens in 2013, the convention center beneath the downtown Mall will connect to a four-story showplace of medical technology on the northeast corner of St. Clair Avenueand Ontario Street.
